On Vancouver Island, winter changes quickly with elevation. Down by the water, cedars drip in the rain and lawns stay green. Start climbing and rain turns to snow, banks build beside the road and, within half an hour of some coastal communities, you can be heading into riding areas that climb above 3,000 feet.
Rising sharply from the Pacific, the Island's mountains catch moisture from coastal storms and pile it into the high country. The result can be remarkably deep snow, groomed mountain trails and a riding season that can stretch well into spring.
Drop back toward sea level and you're back among coastal communities, giant forests and the Pacific Ocean — which makes a snowmobile trip here feel unlike anywhere else in BC.
