CRUISING DOWN MEMORY LANE: FERNIE’S VINTAGE SNOWMOBILE POKER RIDE EVENT

Are you ready to step into a time machine and journey back to the iconic era of the 1980s? Well, on February 17th, 2024 the Fernie Snowmobile Association took us on a thrilling ride down memory lane with their Vintage Snowmobile Poker Ride Event! Decked out in neon, polyester, and even a few retro leather suits, riders from all over BC and Alberta gathered to celebrate the spirit of the 80s while revving up their vintage rides.

The event kicked off with a chilly blast from the past as 39 participants geared up for a frosty morning at the Coal Creek staging area. With impeccably groomed trails and clear blue skies, it was the perfect setting for a tight and bright adventure straight out of a John Hughes film. As the engines sputterer, er… ‘roared’ and the helmets sparkled, riders tested their luck collecting poker hands at five stations spread across a 43km loop, channeling their inner Maverick and Goose.

In the spirit of friendly competition, Colton emerged as the ultimate Ace, securing first place in the poker event. Following closely behind, Skip claimed second place, while father and sun duo Clint and River shared the honor of third place. But the excitement didn't stop there! Skip's vintage ride, a ‘68 Skidoo Super Olympic with chrome bumper and pop up headlight, stole the show, earning him the title of Best Vintage Ride—a well-deserved accolade for preserving a piece of snowmobiling history.

Let's not forget to give a round of applause to Taron and Aaron for their outstanding craftsmanship in creating the incredible trophies. Their dedication and talent added an extra layer of nostalgia to an already unforgettable event.

After an exhilarating ride through the Coal Creek and Morrissey trail network, riders gathered for a Show and Shine Social at the Rolling Hills Cabin. Under the warm winter sun, participants indulged in club President Justin’s legendary home made chili and buns. It was the perfect opportunity to swap stories, admire each other's vintage sleds, and bask in the camaraderie of the snowmobiling community.

With over $2500 in prizes up for grabs, winners rode away with more than a little 80s magic. As the sun set on the Fernie Snowmobile Association's Vintage Snowmobile Poker Ride Event, riders bid farewell to a day filled with laughter and plenty of rad vibes. But the memories made on those snow-covered trails will live on, reminding us that sometimes the best adventures are the ones that take us back in time.
