FAMILY TIME
There is something extra special that happens when your child becomes your sled partner. The person you once cradled in your arms, completely dependent upon you, is now the sled buddy who you trust to have your back. When kids grow up in a snowmobile home an extra special dynamic will occur that can only happen by spending time exploring the British Columbia Backcountry.
Now it’s not all sunshine and rainbows when sled kids ride with their parents, for sometimes the same baggage that happens at home will happen on the hill. If the kids are a bit headstrong or sarcastic, it will not magically disappear, but remember parents, you are the captain now, and being out in the backcountry is a privilege.
Here are some of the perks of riding with your child:
You’ll always have a buddy to ride with at the spur of the moment
You will have influence in safety training and will have confidence in your child’s abilities
You will make lasting family memories that stand the test of time.
You’ll deepen your connection with one another surrounded by breathtaking scenery and adventure.
You have a chance to mentor in responsibility, terrain and group management, so when they are riding with their friends, you can have peace of mind knowing they are safe.
Many British Columbia areas are conducive to all skill levels of riding. This is great for parents, for it will allow you to develop your child’s skill incrementally. Trail riding is an excellent way to start to develop sled legs. Look for groomed and maintained trails that are user friendly. The Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail is an excellent choice if your family is looking for a peaceful adventure. The Gold Rush Trail (GRT) originated in the 1850s when many men traversed the great unknown to seek the ultimate golden motherlode during the Gold Rush in British Columbia. The Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail (GRST) is located in the Cariboo Region of BC and since its initial concept, some 20 years ago, has progressed to include a legally established portion from 70 Mile House to just south of Horsefly. Work continues on the trail so that when complete you will be able snowmobile from Clinton to Wells-Barkerville linking communities such as 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Horsefly, Quesnel and Likely along the way. Check their website to keep up to date on their progress building the trail and be sure to support the completion of this project with a donation.
If your budding sled kid is wanting to start to boondock and pop pillows there are limitless options within the province of BC to consider. Look for simple terrain, and easy access to the area if they are just starting out. Valemount has wonderful terrain to enjoy as a family in multiple zones, that offer a chance to learn how to carve, jump and navigate trees in terrain that is user friendly. Allan Creek and Clemina are both such zones, with limitless fun that is low consequence, with a handy warm up shelter near by to take the chill off should need be.
These are only a few examples of family fun to be had in the province of British Columbia. It’s a good idea to reach out to and support the local clubs that maintain and operate our areas. They will have local knowledge that will be invaluable and can point you in the right direction when looking for a local guide. You may just find yourselves being invited out by local riders who know exactly where to find the goods. They will welcome you with open arms, if you are supporting the sport with your membership to their organization. Club information can be found here at www.bcsf.org/clubs
