Avalanche Awareness Days - Revelstoke Jan 21.

 Hello Trendsetters,

The Canadian Avalanche Centre is hosting an Avalanche Awareness Day on Boulder Mountain, Revelstoke, Saturday January 21.  Download the poster for all the details and share it with your friends or better yet,  print it off and post it in your store, garage or shop and let your quests and friends know all about it.  This years snowpack is shapping up to be a challenge so "STOP" and think about your routes, travel plans, trigger points and wind effects before you blast into the fresh pow.  It's only smart.  Learn all about it at Avalanche Awareness Days.

S.T.O.P. - A "Situational Awareness" tool for sledders, by sledders.

S.T.O.P. With over 25 years of technical snowmobile riding and mountain travel experience, industry training advisor Doug Washer created S.T.O.P. to help sledders improve on their situational awareness skills and to make safety conscious decisions while traveling in the backcountry. This simple, effective, habit forming tool encourages sledders to make observations about critical safety factors throughout the day.

Sledders travel great distances through ever changing, unique terrain features, inconsistent snowpack and micro climates, often without stopping to observe the changes that have taken place.  Read more »

Snowmobiles Send Shockwaves into Snowpack

Posted by doug on Wed, 2011-12-07 13:07 in avalanche, research, snowmobile, training, triggers

Snowmobiles, while traveling over the snow cause pressure waves that travel down into the snowpack.  If that pressure wave, commonly referred as the “Stress bulb” travels deep enough to trigger an instability within the snowpack, you may be causing your own avalanche and in fact, most victims caught in avalanches, triggered the avalanche themselves.

To learn more about the effects of your snowmobile on the snowpack and it’s influence in triggering avalanches, view the following presentation by Scott Thumlert based on research with Bruce Jamieson of the university of Calgary.
